Réjean OBomsawin, Mdawlino (Spiritual Leader) and traditional Abenaki Elder, shares insights into the spirituality, the culture, the role of Mdawlino within the community, and the sacred rituals that remain alive today. This interview, conducted by Jacinthe Laliberté, assistant to the Mdawlino and spiritual guide, highlights the central role of Elder Réjean OBomsawin in preserving and transmitting the spiritual and cultural traditions of the Abenaki people, while also addressing the modernization of these practices within the community.

The spirituality of the Wôbanaki, members of the great Eastern confederation including the Abenaki, is based on a deep connection with the Great Creator (Kchi Tabaldak). Although disrupted from the 17th century onward by colonization and the introduction of Christianity, this ancestral spirituality remains alive thanks to figures like Mdawlino. It is upon these shared spiritual foundations of the Wôbanaki that Réjean OBomsawin, himself Abenaki, practices and transmits the sacred traditions of his community, while adapting these teachings to contemporary realities.

Mdawlino: The term Mdawlino can be translated as "Spiritual Leader" in the Abenaki language. The Mdawlino is the Guardian of the community’s ceremonies and traditions. As a Sage of ancestral memories and beliefs, the Mdawlino plays a central role in preserving sacred rites and teachings.
